ENDURANCE TRAINING FOR THE TEENAGER ATHLETE

Message from the Area Representative

Dear Colleague,

We are half way through 2002 and our Regional Development Centre is keeping apace with its proposed programme. I was particularly pleased that some twenty five member federations from our region sent delegates to participate in the Information Technology Seminar in Puerto Rico right after the Easter holidays. The importance of this course should be greatly appreciated considering the mandate of the IAAF that communication would be by email to all member federations after January 1, 2002. 1 am happy to inform you through this medium that the transition has apparently gone very well as I have had no complaints from our members.

The second half of the year promises to be just as busy for Centre's Director Lenford Levy. He has taken the opportunity to arrange a course for middle and long distance coaches to be hosted at the High Performance Training Centre in Kingston Jamaica after the completion of the 9th World Junior Athletics Championships. I do hope that coaches who have been invited to participate will do so as I do believe that every effort should be made to take the area athletics programme into another sphere of meaningful participation. Some countries within our area have shown that success in this area can be achieved if the approach to required training is implemented.

I must impress upon our members that they should not be afraid to seek coaching assistance from their colleagues who have been successful in areas they are striving to achieve.

Leaders, please ensure that maximum use will be made of all the remaining courses that will be available to your coaches for 2002 and most importantly use those qualified coaches to accompany your teams to International competitions.
