Editorial
This
year our senior athletes will see competition mainly on the Grand Prix and Golden
League circuits, complemented by the Commonwealth Games, NACAC U 25 and in the
latter part of the year the World Cup in Athletics and the CAC Games.
Meanwhile,
Junior Athletes will have a heavy schedule of regional and international competitions,
culminating with the World Junior Championships (WJC) in Kingston, Jamaica from
July 16 21, 2002. The season started with a highly successful CARIFTA Games in
Bahamas at the end of March for the Caribbean zone. The 31st edition of these
games, organized by the Bahamas Association of Athletics Associations (BAAA) was
highlighted by the presence of the IAAF President, Lamine Diack. Twenty one (21)
nations competed over three days of keen competitions, of which 17 won medals.
Jamaica continue, to maintain dominance at this level, on having crowned as the
overwhelming champion with a haul of 67 medals. However, not to be outdone, their
regional counterparts from Trinidad, Grenada and host Bahamas also took their
share of the glory.
Meanwhile, the Central American zone celebrated their
Junior Championships May 25 26 in Guatemala City, a competition of much less intensity
and caliber in comparison with their Caribbean counterparts.
The build up
for Junior Athletes to the World Junior Championships (WJC), continues with the
staging of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Athletic Championships
in Bridgetown, Barbados from July 5 7, 2002. This promises to be a highly competitive
event as the region's top juniors demonstrate their level of preparation in vying
for places to the Worlds in Kingston, just 10 days prior to the main event.
In
order to develop camaraderie and overall preparedness for the WJC in Kingston,
the RDC San Juan in collaboration with the Amateur Athletic Association of Barbados,
CACAC and NACAC is planning a camp in Barbados after the CAC Championships. All
athletes and coaches destined for the World Junior Championships will be invited.
We trust that all national federations will seize the opportunity to participate,
with a view to enhance the quality of their participation in this year's Championships.
The
2nd. edition of the NACAC under 25 Championships in San Antonio, Texas (August
9 11) will show the standard of our continents' athletes at the intermediate level
and should serve as a platform for the IAAF World Championships in 2003 and the
2004 Athens Olympic Games.
We at the RDC San Juan will continue to advance
the means of development of our sport at the regional and subsequently international
levels and trust that you will make use of the services we provide to that end.
We salute our juniors in this edition of the Technical Bulletin and wish them
much success in "Kingston 2002".
