Report
On reviewing our plan of activities for the year 2002,
we are confident that we were able to impact positively on the sport in the region
through educational and promotional programmes.
Having successfully completed
our targeted activities, we were able to continue our collaboration with Member
Federations and other members of the fraternity in the conduct of other complementary
activities, which are important to the development process of the sport in the
region.
After many years of pursuing a number and variety of development initiatives,
we are now seeing the level of success and regional awareness of the sport, necessary
for continued growth. This is strongly supported by the drive by many of our members
to obtain adequate facilities and equipment, which would greatly enhance their
potential at the national level and further encourage mass participation at the
base.
The level of participation and success by athletes from our Member
Federations at the IAAF World Junior Championships (WJC), IAAF World Cup in Athletics,
among other international competitions during 2002 are commendable. It should
be noted that since the turn of the new Millennium, from the Sydney Olympic Games
2000, the 2001 IAAF World Championships and through 2002, we have seen a qualitatively
diverse performance by athletes from our Member Federations. These indicators
would imply that there is a gradual and general progress in the sport regionally,
both at the junior as well as the senior levels.
All 32 members served by
this RDC have taken part in one or more of the activities coordinated by the RDC
San Juan in 2002. We were also able to accommodate a number of federations from
CONSUDATLE (BOL, GUY and VEN), served by RDC Santa F6 in some activities.
A
grand total of two hundred and sixty two (262) participants; 184 men (70%) and
78 women (30%) took part in a total of nine (9) activities directly coordinated
by us this year. While the overall involvement of women in activities conducted
by the RDC in 2002 is acceptable, we must continue to encourage the participation
of women in the sport, especially in coaching as this seems to gradually becoming
an extinct group.
Our programme of activities for 2003 will again target
personnel in all areas of the fraternity. These include:
o Electronic Timing
& Starters Seminar (March 19 22)
o IAAF Coaches Education & Certification
System (CECS Level 11 Sprints Hurdles (Spanish) (May 18 31)
o Financial Resourcing
& Budgeting
Seminar (July 1 2)
'Women in Athletics Coaching' Seminar
(September 5 6)
CECS Level I Lecturers Seminar (June 16 25)
IAAF Coaches
Education & Certification System (CECS Level 11 Throws (December 7 20)
Strength Training Workshop (TBD) Course Measurement Seminar (TBD)
We will
also establish temporary offices at the CARIFTA Games (TRI), PAN AM Juniors (BAR),
CAC Senior Championships (GRN) and at the PAN AM Games (DOM), where we will be
available to meet with Federations' representatives and coaches to discuss matters
of mutual interest.
Hopefully, improvement in communication and collaboration
with Member Federations in the New Year would allow us to serve even better in
the interest of a common goal the continued development of our sport in the region.
