Message
from the Area Representative
We are approaching the end of another
calendar year and as a region can look with pride and satisfaction at what has
been achieved at our Regional Development Centre in San Juan during 2002. Much
of this credit must go to the Centre's Director Lenford Levy, who has demonstrated
growing assurance in all aspects of his leadership. The mandate set by the IAAF
development commission in 2001 has been attained and our region should be reaping
the benefits of such work, hopefully in the not too distant future.
We must
never lose sight of the fact that the individuals sent to the centre for whatever
course are very privileged persons and one can only hope that our leaders are
selecting the best possible candidates to be exposed to such quality training.
Our leaders therefore have another very important responsibility and that is to
demand of those individuals' contributions to the ongoing developments of their
various programmes.
Recent decisions by the Development Commission in granting
additional funding in some key areas is a demonstration of the IAAF's commitment
to the continued development of athletics and must be grasped with both hands
as we strive to keep track and field as the leading sport within the Olympic movement.
We
wish the Director another good year in 2003 and it is my hope that every nation
within the region will have candidates for at least one course offered by our
Development Centre.
